Location:

The position is in the corporate office of Flytxt at Trivandrum. Expected to travel to customer sites whenever required, sometimes at short notice. On-site activities are currently primarily in India but may include foreign travel.

Junior and Mid-Level Systems Engineers.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Senior System Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  1. Work as the senior member of the Systems Engineering team, reporting to VP level.
  2. Manage, train and mentor a growing team of Systems Engineers.
  3. Project manage the activities of the team, ensuring on-time delivery of tasks and projects.
  4. Pro-actively work to improve Flytxt’s systems – identifying areas for enhancement and driving through their implementation.
  5. Administer Flytxt’s network of Solaris 10 x64 servers, dealing with all aspects of OS configuration including rollout, storage, network, security, backups, monitoring, patching.
  6. Perform OS tuning and optimisation to maximise performance.
  7. Follow strict security standards across all systems, implementing and monitoring security processes, policies and technologies.
  8. Deploy, manage and monitor Flytxt Neon Production, Staging, QA and Dev environments.
  9. Administer high-availability 24/7 Production environments maintaining strict SLAs.
  10. Design and rollout software packages, manage patches and upgrades.
  11. Write scripts to automate all aspects of OS configuration and management.
  12. Change and configuration management.
  13. Troubleshoot Flytxt’s software and communicate with engineers to resolve problems.
  14. Tune the operation of the platform and suggest improvements.
  15. Work closely with software engineers to understand changes and new features.
  16. Mentor and train System Engineers and Junior System Engineers

Qualification & Experience

Essential:

  1. 7+ years experience in the administration of high performance UNIX systems.
  2. Very strong experience in Solaris 10 systems’ administration.
  3. Good experience of managing 24/7 Production environments with strict SLAs.
  4. Able to lead a growing team of experienced and inexperienced Systems Engineers.
  5. Able to manage tasks, set goals, assess priorities and provide on-time delivery of projects.
  6. Excellent English and communication skills.
  7. Good practical experience of shell scripting for automating administration tasks.
  8. Good understanding of system monitoring solutions such as Nagios, Big Brother, OpenView.
  9. Able to work both hands-on and as a designer.
  10. Strong knowledge of networking including routing, firewalling, and switch configuration.
  11. Strong understanding of OS internals - file systems, IO, storage, processes/threads, memory.
  12. Ability to troubleshoot complex systems under customer pressure.
    Strongly Preferred Attributes:
  13. Experience of enterprise SAN storage solutions.
  14. Fluency in an advanced scripting or programming language (e.g. Python, Perl, Ruby, Java, C)
  15. Good experience of Solaris Zones/Containers.
  16. Good experience of Solaris SMF management.
  17. Good experience of the ZFS filesystem.
  18. Experience of an Enterprise RDBMS, ideally Oracle
  19. Experience of Java Application Servers such as JBoss, and JMS messaging
